  1. Find a SASSA branch and contact information here if you are interested in applying for the War Veterans Grant.
  2. By way of a power of attorney, a family member or friend may apply on your behalf if you are unable to visit the SASSA office yourself. Your procurator is responsible for applying for or receiving your social grant on your behalf.
  3. You must complete the SASSA application form in the presence of a SASSA officer. If you or your appointed person are unable to complete the application form, a SASSA officer will be able to help.
  4. A SASSA official who assisted you in the application will be named on the dated stamp on the receipt. The receipt you receive will serve as proof of your application.

Sassa War Veterans Grant Means Test

A means test is used by SASSA to determine the amount of social grants. To determine whether an applicant qualifies for a grant, a means test evaluates their income and assets.

Income threshold: Individuals must not have assets over R1 372 800, while married couples must not have assets over R2 745 600.

Sassa War Veterans Grant Payments

The date of payment will be determined after your grant has been approved. This is where you can find when the next SASSA payment is due (it usually falls on the second or third day of each month).

Depending on your preference, you can receive your War Veterans Grant in one of three ways:

  • Your bank account will be debited directly
  • Cash collected from approved pay points
  • From specific institutions

The Consent Form for Bank Payment of SASSA Grant must be completed and the following documents must be provided if you wish to receive your grant into your bank account: proof of identity (ID/birth certificate/driver license) and proof of your bank account (received from the bank) or three months of bank statements identifying you (name and bank account number).

The new payment method will take effect the following month after you change your payment method at the Welfare office.

Your grant can be picked up by someone else if you are unable to collect it yourself. 

Grant Reviews

All incomes you receive must be documented in your application.

To continue receiving the grant, grant holders must submit applications to verify that they still meet the grant’s criteria. Applicants’ applications are reviewed to determine whether their circumstances have changed.

A SASSA notification will be sent to applicants three months prior to the review of their applications. The notification will inform you of the time and location of the review, and what will happen afterward. A home visit will be conducted for applicants who are bedridden. Compliance receipts will be sent to you after the review is complete.

Once a refugee’s refugee status expires, their application will be reviewed.

Grant Suspension

The following reasons may cause your grant to be suspended:

  • Changes in your circumstances
  • In your application, you provided false or incorrect information
  • When the grant was being reviewed, you failed to cooperate
  • Review results
  • There was a mistake in approving the grant

Grant Restoration

Within 90 days after receiving a suspension letter, you may apply to have the grant restored if it was suspended for any of the reasons above.

Grant Lapse

There are several reasons why your grant may lapse:

  • There has been a death in the grant holder
  • An institution funded by the state admitted the grant holder
  • There have been 3 consecutive months without a claim for the grant
  • South Africa is no longer the residence of the grant holder
  • Having improved their assets or income, the grant holder no longer meets the means test.

Grant Notes

It is your responsibility as a grant holder to:

  • If your financial or personal circumstances change, keep SASSA informed
  • Changes in your physical address or contact information should be reported to SASSA

SASSA will send official notices by registered mail to the applicant’s most recent address if there are any changes. Suspension of your grant may occur if you do not respond to the notices.

Fraudulent activities are not tolerated by SASSA.
