How to Apply for SASSA Grant-In-Aid

Visit a SASSA office near you to apply for a Grant-In-Aid or apply online (here are instructions for applying online via the SASSA services website).

Applicants must complete the application form in the presence of a SASSA officer at the SASSA office. Whenever you or your appointed person do not feel capable of completing the application form, a SASSA officer can assist you.

In addition to the older persons grant, the disability grant, or the war veteran grant, applicants may apply for the Grant-In-Aid as well.

Having a family member or friend apply for you, by way of a power of attorney, is an option if you are unable to visit the SASSA office yourself. In this role, your procurator will represent you in applying or receiving your social grant.

To qualify for Grant-In-Aid, applicants must submit an updated medical report or assessment report, at least three months old, that confirms that they need full-time care. Whether a state doctor or a private doctor conducts the medical report is up to them.

A grant interview will be conducted, your fingerprints will be taken, and you will be informed if you qualify.

The SASSA official who assisted in the application will be identified on the stamped receipt. In order to prove your application, you will need to keep your receipt.

The Application Review Process

Following submission, SASSA officials review the application thoroughly. A Grant-In-Aid team assesses the information provided, verifies the applicant’s eligibility, and evaluates additional needs that require support. Grant Amount and Payment Schedule

After 30 business days, we will let you know whether your application has been approved or rejected. An explanation of the reasons for your rejection will be provided by SASSA if you are rejected.

The Minister of Social Development can hear your appeal if your application is still rejected after reconsideration.

In three months from the date of application, approved applicants will start receiving payments. Backdated payments will be made according to your application date.

You will receive your grant payment on the date your application was approved.

In accordance with your preference, you can receive your Disability Grant in any of the following three ways:

• Your bank account will be credited directly
• Pay points approved for cash collection
• Institution-specific

Your grant can be deposited into your bank account if you complete the Consent Form for Bank Payment of SASSA Grant , as well as provide the following documents: identification (ID/birth certificate/driver license) and proof of your bank account (received from the bank) or 3 months bank statement showing your personal information (name and bank account number).

By visiting the Welfare office, you can change your payment method – the new method will take effect the following month.

Upon receiving your main grant, your Grant-In-Aid will also be paid.

Grant Reviews

For grant-holders to continue receiving grants, applications are reviewed to verify that they still meet grant criteria. If your circumstances have changed, your application will be reviewed.

3 months before applications are to be reviewed, SASSA will inform applicants in writing. You will be notified of the date, location, and results of the review in the notification. In the case of bedridden applicants, a home visit will be conducted. A receipt of compliance will be issued once the review has been completed.

When refugees’ refugee status expires, their applications will be reviewed. 

Grant Suspension

The following reasons may cause your grant to be suspended:

• The means test no longer applies to you because of a change in your circumstances, either financially or medically
• In your application, you provided inaccurate or false information
• The grant review was not conducted in a cooperative manner by you
• Review outcome
• There was an error in approving the grant

Grant Restoration

Within 90 days of receiving the suspension, you may apply to have your grant restored if it has been suspended for any of the reasons listed above. 

SASSA Grant-In-Aid Lapse

The following reasons may cause your grant to expire:

• The grant holder has passed away
• A state-funded institution admitted the grant holder
• Full-time care is no longer provided to the grant holder
• There has been no claim for the grant for three consecutive months

SASSA Grant-In-Aid Notes

It is your responsibility as a grant holder to:

• If your financial or personal circumstances change, keep SASSA informed
• Update SASSA with any changes to your contact information or physical address

In the event that any of your contact information changes, please inform SASSA as soon as possible, as official notices will be sent by registered mail to your latest address. Suspension of your grant may occur if you fail to respond to the notices.

Fraudulent activities will not be tolerated by SASSA.
